Chronic cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder that lasts for a long time. It is almost always caused by a previous episode of gallstones and acute cholecystitis. Chronic cholecystitis is characterized by recurrent episodes of pain (biliary colic) when gallstones periodically block the cystic duct.
In chronic cholecystitis, the gallbladder is damaged by repeated bouts of acute inflammation, usually caused by gallstones, and may thicken, scar, and become smaller.
